The most important decision in balcony gardening happens before you buy a seed packet, fill a pot, or choose a trellis. It is the decision to observe your space honestly. A balcony is not simply a small version of a backyard; it is a particular growing environment shaped by concrete, glass, railings, reflected heat, building rules, limited access, and the habits of the person who lives there. If you understand those conditions first, your garden can become productive without becoming another demanding obligation.
Many first-time gardeners begin with the plants they want. They imagine tomatoes heavy with fruit, basil ready for pasta, lettuce for weekday lunches, and climbing beans rising along a railing. Then they purchase attractive containers and discover that the balcony receives only two hours of sun, the wind dries everything by midafternoon, or the nearest outdoor tap is several floors away. The failure is rarely caused by a lack of enthusiasm. More often, the garden was designed around aspiration rather than evidence.
Your first task is therefore not planting. It is assessment. You are going to study the balcony as a site, measure what is genuinely usable, identify its limits, and connect those findings to your schedule and cooking life. The result will be a garden that fits your circumstances instead of competing with them.
Choose a day when you are not rushing between meetings, errands, or household responsibilities. Bring a tape measure, a notebook, a pencil, and your phone. You may also want masking tape to mark possible container locations and a simple compass app to identify the direction your balcony faces. Spend at least fifteen minutes standing in the space without trying to solve anything. Notice where you naturally walk, where you pause, where the door swings, and which areas already feel crowded.
Measure the total length and depth of the balcony, but do not confuse total floor area with usable floor area. A balcony may be four metres long, yet part of that length might be occupied by an air-conditioning unit, storage cabinet, drain, or door clearance. A narrow strip beside the railing may technically be available but too tight for safe movement. Record the clear walking path separately from the areas where containers could sit. The garden should occupy space that is genuinely available, not space you must repeatedly step over.
Measure height as well as width. Look above the balcony for an overhang, awning, ceiling, or upper floor that could restrict light or trellis growth. Check the height of the railing and the distance between its bars. These details determine whether you can attach a planter securely, whether a climbing crop can rise without touching the building, and whether a container could fall or be blown through an opening. Railing space can be productive, but it must never be treated as free space simply because it is vertical.
Walls and corners deserve their own measurements. A blank wall may support a narrow vertical system, a series of lightweight pockets, or a trellis for compact cucumbers and climbing herbs. Yet a wall can also create a pocket of intense heat or block air movement. Corners often seem ideal because they are out of the way, but they may receive little light and become difficult to water. Note both the dimensions and the conditions of each potential growing zone.
Your map does not need to be artistic. Draw the balcony from above, mark the door, railing, walls, drains, outlets, storage, and walking route, then add measurements. Create a second sketch from the side to show ceiling height, railing height, and any overhead restrictions. This simple record will prevent a common mistake: buying containers that fit individually but cannot coexist comfortably once filled, watered, and placed where you can actually reach them.
Sunlight is the most influential environmental factor you can measure, and it is also the one people most often estimate incorrectly. A balcony described as “bright” may receive very little direct sun. Light bouncing from a pale wall can make the area feel luminous while providing less usable intensity than the unobstructed rays required by fruiting crops. Your plants respond to the duration and quality of light, not to how pleasant the space appears to your eyes.
Observe the balcony in the morning, around midday, and in the late afternoon. Repeat the observations on several days if possible, because a single sunny day can mislead you. Mark which areas receive direct sunlight and for approximately how long. A bright patch that moves across the floor is valuable information; it may allow you to place a container of tomatoes where the sun reaches it in the morning and move a leafy crop into the same area later in the season.
Record seasonal changes as well. The sun’s angle shifts throughout the year, and nearby buildings, trees, and balconies may cast shadows that change dramatically between spring, summer, autumn, and winter. A balcony that receives six hours of sun in June may receive two hours in December. If you intend to garden year-round, your map should include a seasonal note rather than relying on the conditions you see today.
For practical planning, classify the balcony into broad light zones. A sunny zone receives several hours of direct sunlight and is the best location for crops such as tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, beans, and many herbs. A partially shaded zone receives some direct light or strong bright light for much of the day and may suit lettuce, chard, parsley, coriander, radishes, and compact greens. A deeply shaded area is not useless, but it calls for realistic expectations: it may hold shade-tolerant herbs, decorative plants, or storage rather than a productive vegetable container.
